The theme of World Youth Day 2008 will be "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witnesses" (Acts 1:8)
In 1986, Pope John Paul II invited the youth of the Catholic Church to gather in St Peter's Square on Palm Sunday to celebrate their faith. This began a journey of faith for all young people of the world and the concept of pilgrimage towards World Youth Day was born. Every year, World Youth Day is celebrated at a Diocesan level on Palm Sunday, with a massive international gathering of youth in a "host city" every 2-3 years. Cities such as Buenos Aires (Argentina), Santiago de Compostela (Spain), Częstochowa (Poland), Denver (USA), Manila (Philippines), Paris (France), Rome (Italy), Toronto (Canada) and Cologne (Germany) have all hosted the international World Youth Day. On 21 August 2005, perched on a hill at Marienfeld outside Cologne, Pope Benedict XVI invited the youth of the world to proclaim and celebrate the Holy Spirit at the 23rd World Youth Day to be held in Sydney, Australia in 2008.
And now, as the living presence of the Risen Christ in our midst nourishes our faith and hope, I am pleased to announce that the next World Youth Day will take place in Sydney, Australia, in 2008. We entrust to the maternal guidance of Mary most holy, the future course of the young people of the whole world.
—Pope Benedict XVI, WYD 2005, Marienfield
From July 2007 until World Youth Day, a large wooden WYD Cross (entrusted to the youth of the world from Pope John Paul II as a sign of peace and hope) and a large Icon of the Virgin Mary (as a symbol of Mary's maternal love for young people) will journey around the dioceses of Australia, engaging with a variety of Catholic parishes and communities.
World Youth Day is the world's largest youth festival. It will begin with the Opening Mass on 15 July 2008, celebrated by George Cardinal Pell, the Archbishop of Sydney. Pilgrims will be able to celebrate Mass and Catechesis each morning with the rest of the world. There will be youth festivals each afternoon with concerts, seminars, conferences, etc. On the Thursday, the youth of the world will welcome the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI to Sydney. The Way of the Cross (Stations of the Cross) will be held through the streets of Sydney on Friday. On Saturday 19 July 2008, The Sydney Harbour Bridge will be the focus of a 10-kilometre pilgrims' walk in which tens of thousands of Catholics will cross the city to attend an overnight vigil before the Mass at Randwick Racecourse.
Up to 400,000 pilgrims will sleep out under the stars at Randwick, before an estimated 600,000 Catholics are expected to attend the final Mass celebrated by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday 20 July 2008[1]. Pope Benedict will follow a tradition of Australian Papal Masses at Randwick Racecourse following in the footsteps of Popes John Paul II and Paul VI.
The event is expected to bring more than $100 million to the economy of New South Wales[2]
The theme song Receive the Power was written by first Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian [3].

No Turning Back
Fr. Donald Calloway Conversion Story
(DVD or Audio CD)
(This movie is available at John Paul the Great Bookstore in Agana.)
The son of self-proclaimed "hillbillies" from the back woods of West Virginia, Donald Calloway was raised without any religion or a father figure to model. Finally baptized as a Protestant at the age of ten, he never received any formal Christian instruction. And when his family moved to California, he slipped into the "MTV lifestyle" - sex, drugs and rock music. This pagan rebellion intensified to total mayhem when his family relocated to Japan and he ran away from home.
Satisfaction of the senses became young Donald's rule of life that escalated to a life of crime. Constantly on the move to avoid arrest, he and his friends soon got connected with the Japanese Mafia. During this time of endless wanton wandering filled with wine, women and song, Donald's mother became Catholic and fervently prayed for her fifteen-year-old prodigal son to return home. Like a modern-day St. Monica, she trusted that God would touch his soul with the grace of repentance.
Full of unexpected twists and turns, No Turning Back will inspire you to recognize and embrace the countless graces God grants in your own life. Part of a new generation of priests, Fr. Calloway's amazing story powerfully manifests Our Lord's infinite mercy and faithfulness. Order No Turning Back: Confessions of a Catholic Priest today and share this inspiring and unforgettable journey with your lukewarm family members, fallen-away friends and any lost souls that need a powerful reminder of God's love and faithfulness.

Prayer is the practice of the presence of God. It is the place where pride is abandoned, hope is lifted, and supplication is made. Prayer is the place of admitting our need, of adopting humility, and claiming dependence upon God. Prayer is the needful practice of the Christian. Prayer is the exercise of faith and hope. Prayer is the privilege of touching the heart of the Father through His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Born Joseph Alois Ratzinger on April 16, 1927 is the the 265th pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He was elected on April 19, 2005, in the 2005 papal conclave. He was formally enthroned during the Papal Inauguration Mass on April 24, 2005.
The new Pope, Benedict XVI was elected at the age of 78, the oldest pope since Clement XII (elected 1730) at the start of his papacy. He is the eighth German pope, the last being Adrian VI (1522–1523), while the first was Gregory V (996–999). The last Pope Benedict, Benedict XV, was an Italian who served as pope from 1914 to 1922 and reigned during World War I.
Ratzinger had a career as a university theologian before he was made Archbishop of Munich, and he was subsequently made a Cardinal by Pope Paul VI in the consistory of June 27, 1977. He was appointed prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith by Pope John Paul II in 1981 and was made a Cardinal Bishop of Title of episcopal see of the Suburbicarian Church of Velletri-Segni on April 5, 1993. In 1998, he was made Vice-Dean of the College of Cardinals; later, on November 30, 2002, he became the dean. This last position also resulted in his becoming Cardinal Bishop of the Suburbicarian Church of Ostia, La Candelaria.

The New American Bible daily Mass readings are now downloadable from the U.S. Bishops' Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) Web site, in association with the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine using audio recordings of the readings from the New American Bible.
"The Internet is now a part of our lives and a medium which can help provide for spiritual enrichment," says Archbishop George H. Niederauer of San Francisco, chairman of the USCCB Committee on Communications. "This service complements the text versions of the readings already popular on the USCCB Web site and responds to the many requests for 'podcasts' of the readings."
You can use any of the most popular podcast services − Feedburner, iTunes, or Podcast Alley − to subscribe and download the readings every day. Click here. |
